Physical Fitness Test for Station Officer/Fireman/Firewoman (Operational/Marine)


Candidates are required to complete the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire & You before undergoing the tests, which will be conducted with adequate safety precautions being taken.

Candidates are required to pass both the Physical Fitness Test and the Job-related Performance Test in sequential order. Those who fail in the Physical Fitness Test shall not proceed to the Job-related Performance Test. Candidates are given a 5-minute rest between two test items. Those who fail in any one item of a test shall cease continuing with the test and be deemed as failing the subject test and the entire assessment.

1.
Yo-Yo Endurance Test

A candidate is required to run to and fro between two markers positioned 20 metres apart. Each run has to be completed within a time interval indicated by two signals. If the candidate arrives at the other end before the next signal, he/she must wait at the marker until the next signal is heard. The run will be repeated and the speed required will be raised progressively.

The test will be stopped when the candidate fails to complete two consecutive runs at the speed required or attains the speed level required.

The last speed level and the number of runs at that speed level will be recorded.

2. Pronated chin-up
(60 Seconds)

A candidate is required to hold the horizontal bar with shoulder’s width by pronated grip to perform the chin-up actions within 60 seconds.

The test will be stopped if the candidate falls down from the bar or completes the required number of chin-up actions or when the time is up.

The number of chin-ups within the time limit will be recorded.

3.
Vertical Jump

A candidate standing with preferred shoulder adjacent to a wall and feet flat on the floor, reaches as high as possible to touch the wall. Starting point (standing reach height) represents the distance from the wall mark (middle finger) to the floor, recorded in centimeters (cm). The difference in distance between the standing reach height and the jumping height is the score.

The better score of his/her two trials of the jumps will be recorded.

4.
Parallel Bar Dip (60 Seconds)

A candidate is required to perform dip actions on parallel bars within 60 seconds.

The test will be stopped if the candidate falls down from the bars or completes the required number of dip actions or when the time is up.

The number of dip actions performed within the time limit will be recorded.

5.
Bent-knee Sit-Ups (60 Seconds)

A candidate is required to perform smooth sit-up actions within 60 seconds.

The test will be stopped when the candidate lies down on the mat for rest or completes the required number of sit-ups or when the time is up.

The number of sit-ups performed within the time limit will be recorded.

6.
Push Up (60 seconds)

A candidate is required to perform the push-up actions within 60 seconds.

The test will be stopped if the candidate lies prone on the floor or lifts up his/her buttocks for rest or completes the required number of push-up or when the time is up.

The number of push-ups performed within the time limit will be recorded.

7.
Sit and Reach

A candidate sitting on the floor is required to push a scale rider with his fingers as far forward as possible and hold the position for 3 seconds.

The best score of his/her three attempts will be recorded.

8.
Burpee (60 seconds)

A candidate is required to perform the smooth burpee actions progressively within 60 seconds.

The test will be stopped when the candidate lies prone on the ground for rest or completes the required number of burpees or when the time is up.

The number of burpees performed within the time limit will be recorded.

1. Stair Climb *

A candidate, wearing a fire helmet, a pair of gloves and a set of breathing apparatus, is required to retrieve a piece of equipment and a rolled hose from an upper locker of a fire engine** with jacks engaged from a standing position on the ground. He/She then carries the equipment upstairs to the third storey of a building 10 metres away from the fire engine.

The time taken to complete the action will be recorded.

The candidate fails the test if he/she:
1.
fails to retrieve the equipment from the fire engine.
2.
fails to maintain both feet on the ground whilst retrieving the equipment.
3.
drops the equipment on his/her way.
4.
loses balance on his/her way.
5.
fails to cross the end line.

2.
Ladder Climb *

A candidate, wearing a fire helmet and a set of breathing apparatus with safety harness attached, is required to climb up a ladder ‘rung by rung'. After reaching the designated position, he/she is required to identify the colours of the objects placed on the ground and then climb down the ladder ‘rung by rung'.

The time taken to complete the action will be recorded.

The candidate fails the test if he/she:
1.
identifies the wrong colour.
2.
slips off the ladder.
3.
fails to climb up or down the ladder 'rung by rung'.
4.
fails to reach the designated position at the top.
5.
fails to stand with both feet on the ground firmly after the descent.
6.
fails to complete within the time limit.

3.
Tunnel Crawl *

A candidate, wearing a fire helmet, a pair of gloves and a set of breathing apparatus, is required to proceed from the starting point 5 metres from a tunnel and to crawl through the tunnel. After exit from the tunnel, he/she is required to cross the end line 5 metres away.

The time taken to complete the action will be recorded.

The candidate fails the test if he/she:
1.
fails to complete the distance of tunnel crawl independently.
2.
fails to cross the end line.

4.
Obstacle Course *

A candidate, wearing a fire helmet, a pair of gloves and a set of breathing apparatus, is required to retrieve a rolled hose from a fire engine** and carries the hose towards a mark 23 metres away. Along the track, he is required to step in and out of two tyres and pass under a gateway.

The time taken to complete the action will be recorded.

The candidate fails the test if he/she:
1.
kicks the tyre off its centered position.
2.
trips over the tyre.
3.
loses balance on his/her way.
4.
drops the hose.
5.
touches the top or side frames of the gateway.
6.
fails to cross the end line.

Notes for the Job-related Performance Test:
*Candidates will be allowed to attempt the individual test one more time, if the first attempt is unsuccessful. His/her result in the last attempt will be recorded.
**The locker model used in the test is based on the dimensions of the fire engine locker.
