Physical Fitness Test and Job-related Performance Test for
Recruitment of Ambulance Officer and
Ambulanceman / Ambulancewoman

Candidates are required to complete the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire & You before undergoing the tests, which will be conducted with adequate safety precautions being taken.

Candidates are required to pass both the Physical Fitness Test and the Job-related Performance Test in sequential order. Those who fail in the Physical Fitness Test shall not proceed to the Job-related Performance Test. Candidates are given a 5-minute rest between two test items. Those who fail in any one item of a test shall cease continuing with the test and be deemed as failing the subject test and the entire assessment.

1.
Yo-Yo Endurance Test

A candidate is required to run to and fro between two markers positioned 20 metres apart. Each run has to be completed within a time interval indicated by two signals. If the candidate arrives at the other end before the next signal, he/she must wait at the marker until the next signal is heard. The run will be repeated and the speed required will be raised progressively. The test will be stopped when the candidate fails to complete two consecutive runs at the speed required or attains the speed level required.

The last speed level and the number of runs at that speed level will be recorded.

(equal to 50 times 20m running distance)

 

 
2. Ladder Climbing with Hands
(60 Seconds)

A candidate is required to climb rung by rung between two ends of a ladder placed horizontally using his/her hands and with both feet off the ground within 60 seconds. The test will be stopped if the candidate falls from the ladder or completes the required number of rungs climbed or when the time is up.

The number of rungs climbed within the time limit will be recorded.

3.
Squat (30 Seconds)

A weight equivalent to the body weight of a candidate will be placed on his/her shoulder whilst at standing position. He/She is required to squat and stand up with the weight and repeat such weight liftings within 30 seconds.

The test will be stopped when the candidate completes the required number of liftings or when the time is up.

The number of full weight liftings performed within the time limit will be recorded.

4.
Bent-knee Sit-Ups (60 Seconds)

A candidate is required to perform smooth sit-up actions within 60 seconds.

The test will be stopped when the candidate lies down on the mat for rest or completes the required number of sit-ups or when the time is up.

The number of sit-ups performed within the time limit will be recorded.

5.
Parallel Bar Dip (60 Seconds)

A candidate is required to perform dip actions on parallel bars within 60 seconds.

The test will be stopped if the candidate falls down from the bars or completes the required number of dip actions or when the time is up.

The number of dip actions performed within the time limit will be recorded.

6.
Sit and Reach

A candidate sitting on the floor is required to push a scale rider with his fingers as far forward as possible and hold the position for 3 seconds.

The best score of his/her three attempts will be recorded.

7.
Agility Run

Starting from a lying position, a candidate is required to perform a course of running including a zig-sag run through a series of cones to one end and returns.

If a candidate knocks away/down a cone on his/her way, he/she should return to place the cone on its original position.

The best score of his/her two attempts will be recorded

Job-related Performance Tests for Applicants for Posts in Ambulance Stream

1.
Locate Equipment

A candidate, wearing an ambulance helmet, is required to perform the following steps:

1.
sit in the front passenger seat of an ambulance with seat belt on;
2.
get out of the cabin and close the door with hand grip;
3.
proceed to the rear of the ambulance and step on every step to re-enter the ambulance from the rear;
4.
retrieve a designated object with one hand and the other holding the handrail and with both feet touching the floor of the ambulance;
5.
using the same steps, step on every step to leave the ambulance from the rear; and
6.
proceed to an end line 10 metres at the front of the ambulance.

The time taken to complete the above steps will be recorded.

The candidate fails the test if he/she fails to perform any of the above steps or drops the object, loses balance on his/her way and fails to cross the end line.

2.

Peg Test

A candidate is required to perform the following steps:

1.
stand erect inside an ambulance with one hand holding the handrail and the other fully touching the peg-board placed on the stretcher and with both feet touching the floor;
2.
pick up and place a peg into the hole of a peg-board;
3.
repeat step (2) until all 10 pegs are in position; and
4.
on completion, place the free hand on the top of the peg-board.

The time taken to complete the above steps will be recorded.

The candidate fails the test if, he/she:

1.
let go of the handrail.
2.
drops the peg such that it cannot be recovered independently whilst remaining in original testing position.
3.
fails to put all pegs into the peg-holes.
4.
fails to place free hand on top of the peg-board to indicate task completion.
5.
fails to maintain both his/her feet touching the floor of the ambulance whilst holding the handrail.

3.
Obstacle Course

A candidate, wearing a helmet and a fully loaded ambulance rucksack and carrying a fully loaded trauma kit, is required to proceed a 10-metre distance involving step-in and step-out of three tyres and pass under a gateway on his/her way to the end line.

The time taken to complete the above will be recorded.

The candidate fails the test if he/she:
1.
kicks the tyre off its centered position.
2.
trips over the tyre.
3.
loses balance on his/her way.
4.
drops the equipment.
5.
touches the top or side frames of the gateway.
6 fails to cross the end line.

4.
Stair Climb

A candidate, wearing a helmet, a fully loaded ambulance rucksack, each of the two hands carrying a defibrillator and a fully loaded trauma kit separately, is required to proceed upstairs from the ground floor to the third storey of a building.


The time taken to reach the third storey will be recorded.


The candidate fails the test if he/she:
1. drops any piece of equipment.
2. loses balance on his/her way.
3. fails to cross the end line.
