Duties of a Station Officer

A Station Officer (Operational) is mainly deployed to take charge of a fire station or an emergency appliance; provide training for Firemen/Firewomen; command Firemen/Firewomen and lead them in emergency and fire protection duties; and take part in administrative duties, e.g. staff management, planning duties. A Station Officer (Operational) is subject to discipline and is required to work shifts and to wear uniforms.


Entry requirements

  • Education:
Starting Salary
(a)
have a Hong Kong degree, or equivalent, with "Level 1" results in the two language papers (Use of Chinese and Use of English) in the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE); or

(b)
have a Hong Kong degree, or an accredited Associate Degree from a Hong Kong tertiary institution, or Higher Diploma from a Hong Kong polytechnic university / polytechnic / Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education / technical college, or a Diploma from a registered post-secondary college issued after the date of its registration, or equivalent; AND have Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent; or

(c)
have a pass in 2 subjects at Advanced Level in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination plus 3 other subjects at Grade C or above in the HKCEE, or equivalent; AND have Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the HKCEE (if not included in the aforesaid 3 subjects), or equivalent.

Point 7
 
  • Be able to pass the Eyesight Test (without spectacles);
  • Be able to pass the Physical Fitness Test and Job-related Performance Test;
  • Be able to pass a practical aptitude test; and
  • Be able to speak fluent Cantonese and English.

    [Note: (1) Starting from the CRE held in December 2006, while candidates' results in the Aptitude Test (AT) paper are classified as ‘pass’ or ‘fail’, the results of the Use of Chinese (UC) and Use of English (UE) papers are classified as 'Level 2', 'Level 1' or 'Fail', with 'Level 2' being the highest. (2) Grade 'C' or above and Grade 'D' in Use of English of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE), or equivalent, are accepted as equivalent to 'Level 2' and 'Level 1' results respectively in the UE paper of the CRE. Grade 'C' or above and Grade 'D' in Chinese Language and Culture or Chinese Language and Literature of the HKALE are accepted as equivalent to 'Level 2' and 'Level 1' results respectively in the UC paper of the CRE. (3)An overall band of 6.5 or above with no subtest score below band 6 obtained in the same sitting in the Academic Module of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is continued to be accepted as equivalent to a ‘pass’ in the UE paper of the CRE. The IELTS test must have been taken within 2 years from the starting date of the application period to be considered valid. (4) For civil service appointment purpose, ‘Grade C’ and ‘Grade E’ in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) in previous HKCEE are accepted administratively as comparable to ‘Level 3’ and ‘Level 2’ respectively in Chinese Language and English Language in the 2007 HKCEE.]


Starting Salary

  • Point 7 to Point 9 of the General Disciplined Services (Officer) Pay Scale, as commensurate with respective entry qualifications.


Training

  • A recruit Station Officer (Operational) has to undergo a 26-week residential initial training at the Fire Services Training School.
